From the outset in 2013, when Bethpage Black was designated as the venue for this year`s Ryder Cup, there was an anticipation that the event would be remarkably boisterous, potentially even disorderly. However, the events of Saturday`s afternoon four-ball match, featuring Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, surpassed all prior expectations.
Throughout the 18 holes, the prominent European golfers faced relentless heckling and shouts, particularly during their crucial pre-shot routines and before putting. As the match against Justin Thomas and Cameron Young advanced, and as Europe extended its lead over the United States, the crowd`s fervor intensified. This led to a visible increase in security presence and resulted in multiple spectators being ejected.
On the fourth green, McIlroy was repeatedly forced to step away from his ball due to persistent fan interjections.
«We understood the atmosphere we were stepping into here. It was an exceptionally tough day,» Lowry commented. «Playing alongside Rory doesn`t make it any less challenging. I believe he bore the brunt of most of the abuse.»
Earlier on Saturday, during the foursomes, McIlroy was again targeted by shouts as he prepared to hit a shot, to which he retorted, «Shut the f— up!», a moment captured by the television broadcast.
«I don`t object to them taunting us. That`s, in my opinion, part of an away Ryder Cup experience,» McIlroy stated following his morning match. «It becomes problematic when they continue to do it while you`re over the ball, trying to execute your shot.»
Tensions escalated further as fans singularly focused on McIlroy. Insults ranged from direct profanity like «F— you, Rory,» to specific denigrations of his past major losses at Pinehurst, claims that his Masters victory this year was «a fluke,» and even highly personal attacks concerning his private life and marriage. Lowry also endured his share of verbal attacks, some criticizing his weight, his perceived lack of contribution to their partnership, and the notion that neither of them «could handle the fans.»
«Listen, playing an away Ryder Cup is inherently very, very demanding,» McIlroy reflected. «It`s not my place to judge. People can decide for themselves if the comments went too far or not.»
By the ninth hole on Saturday afternoon, almost twenty New York State Police troopers were positioned along the ropes as players teed off. Officers from Bethpage State Park Police also patrolled the galleries on bicycles.
At the tenth hole, after Lowry and McIlroy had completed their tee shots, Lowry summoned a state trooper, who then escorted a fan out for making a comment directed at McIlroy just before his drive.
The PGA of America confirmed in a statement that they had increased security and deployed state police to McIlroy`s match and other afternoon sessions. They also amplified the number of messages displayed on videoboards reminding fans about appropriate behavior.
«We will maintain close surveillance of fan conduct and implement necessary actions,» the PGA affirmed.
Beau Duffy, a spokesman for the New York State Police, confirmed that two fans had been ejected.
However, despite heightened security, the persistent noise and heckling continued. As McIlroy prepared for a putt on the eleventh green, multiple marshals, rules officials, and even both Thomas and Young raised their arms, attempting to signal to fans in the nearby grandstand to quiet down and allow McIlroy to complete his routine.
While observing from behind that green, European player Robert MacIntyre, who was not playing in the afternoon session, noted to a European staff member that Justin Thomas, who had been feeding off the crowd`s energy, was now appearing to play both sides.
«He`s f—ing egging them on and now he`s trying to calm them down,» MacIntyre remarked.
McIlroy seemed to suppress his emotions amidst the chaos until he found an opportunity to retaliate. On the fourteenth hole, with the match tied, he sank a birdie putt, retrieved his ball, and unleashed a powerful outburst. He fist-pumped emphatically and gestured towards the grandstand crowd, shouting «Come on! Come the f— on!» multiple times before holding a prolonged stare at the fans. When Thomas subsequently missed his birdie putt, giving the Europeans their first lead in the match since the ninth hole, McIlroy again fixated on the crowd and pointed decisively to the scoreboard.
«It was a truly demanding day,» McIlroy concluded. «I`m exhausted… I`m going to sleep soundly tonight.»
On the eighteenth green, following their 2-up triumph over Thomas and Young, both McIlroy and Lowry embraced their wives and teammates. They then celebrated with the grandstand crowd, which by then was largely filled with vocal European supporters.
«I considered the fans to be passionate. I mean, their home team is suffering a significant defeat,» U.S. captain Keegan Bradley commented regarding the American crowd`s behavior. «I wasn`t in Rome, but I heard numerous accounts of Rome being quite aggressive as well. You will invariably encounter a few individuals who cross the line, and that`s regrettable… partly our fault. We aren`t performing to the standards they expect, and they are angry, as they rightfully should be.»
Lowry, however, characterized Saturday`s experience as unparalleled.
«It was intense. It was unlike anything I`ve ever lived through,» Lowry expressed. «But this is precisely what I live for. This is it. This is, honestly, the very reason I wake up in the morning – for moments like these. This is what I genuinely love doing. I love being an integral part of this team. I am truly determined for us to win this tournament.»
